Dyspepsia also known as indigestion is a common problem and is related to difficulty in digesting the food. Many people suffer from this problem where they feel slight burning in stomach and/or chest immediately after eating. Generally this condition is temporary in most people, but if there is a prolonged suffering from this problem, then a treatment is required.
Ayurveda describes dyspepsia as AGNIMANDYA, which is a condition where digesting capacity of the agnis, jatharagni in particular is reduced, and thus indigestion occurs. The aggravation of vata, pitta and kapha create dyspepsia, excess of vata results in pain in the stomach, pitta lead to burning sensation in stomach and excess kapha causes nausea and vomiting.
Dyspepsia symptoms are as follows:
- Pain in stomach
- Sour eructation
- Bad taste in mouth
- Heart burn
- Feeling of discomfort
- Loss of appetite
Irregular food habits such as overeating, eating at wrong time, and wrong type of food are the main causes of dyspepsia. Other causes of indigestion are:
- Reaction to painkiller medicines
- Infection or ulcers
Herbal remedy for indigestion or dyspepsia includes peppermint, lemon, fruits, carrot, and fenugreek. Lemon helps in flushing out the food remains in the stomach that cause indigestion, all fruits in general can help in maintaining healthy stomach, but grapes, pineapple and pomegranate are considered very effective. Consumption of carrot and fenugreek is also advised in dyspepsia.
